He's straight gangsta too, always having to pick his pants up and put his shirt down. Plus his hair is wavier than the girls. You know he's having to fight them off with those swords.

Before blowing the money on expensive replicas or practical models for actual sparring, I'd take some lessons in Kendo and/or Fencing to get a general feel for actual swordsmanship if you're serious about this.
Of course there is no shame in a flashy replica to grace your mantle.

There's also schools of medieval fighting!

That's why I was looking into good looking practical models that were only 150-350. Doesn't seem like much money to drop for a sword that still cuts. Some replicas get ungodly. Katanas and Samurai swords even worse. I figured starting with medieval blades was the best bet because of the price range of them. If I get fed up with it, they'd still look nice enough to throw up on the mantle and I wouldn't be out an arm and a leg. I've dabbled in fencing, and plan on doing it further when I move onto the rapier/cutlass portion of this endeavour.

EDIT: It's either blow it on this, or dump it into the next instalment of my stereo. Speakers alone on the next step are going to be 4,000; so this is a cheap rabbit trail.

I have a feeling, those schools are far, far away from here.

This is what I imagine Daemun doing lol

On topic: I like this one

but I've always preferred longer handles (if the blade is decently long) or short swords if the handle isn't.

Just put a bomb in your chest, and if your heart ever stops, you explode. If someone murders you, they get what's coming; if you accidentally die, you give everyone a nice little surprise; and if you die of old-age, you'll go to heaven with everyone that loves you.

thats copyright infringement. Lukas the Trickster of the spacewolves has a stasis bomb attached to his last remaining heart. If he ever dies in combat, the bomb will explode locking his subduer in an eternal statue allowing lukas to have the last laugh for the rest of time.

I don't know about there, but here the institutions that run real life role playing(not sure how you call that, but I know for sure it exists everywhere!), also organize real courses that teach swordsmanship, archery, and even how to fight with axes, flails and spears. To some it may sound silly but they're really serious about it, they really don't take it as just a game!
Obviously when then they run their events they don't use real weapons, but the battles are pretty epic nonetheless xD

Tikal isn't getting any compensation for that post, so I don't see how it would be copyright infringement.

The rednecks here would never understand or participate in such a thing. I've laughed at my share of D&D 24/7 people, but I wouldn't mind having an epic 'real' simulated battle once a month with a bunch of people using replica weapons. Was the reason I enjoyed paintball so much in jr. high and high school. Shooting someone, without the ramifications.

Pacemaker + microwave

I'm getting seriously distracted with my own responses in my own thread. Apparently I really do have ADD.

Any ways, if anyone has practical sword suggestions or other related hobby suggestions for that matter; do tell. I'm open for opinion, criticism, discussion, w/e. I don't mind the topic wandering either, I am just irritated with myself that I was hell bent on buying a sword this morning and it was the only thing on my mind, and now I'm thinking about how to make pacemakers explode using a microwave.

Well obviously you wouldn't want a real blade that cuts when you seek to gain practice sparring. So i'd start with the practice ones that aren't bladed at all. Once you get your experience to a level you are comfortable and confident with, then it'd make more sense to go for the real deal. Just my opinion though.

Maybe I'll just buy one purdy one that is bladed to keep at the house for a conversation piece and tell people I'm 'learning' with it. I can ask if they want to be tested on. I've found plenty of well built, yet inexpensive blunt pieces that would be good for training purposes, but again, I do want one at the house that is functional. I agree with what you're saying though Art, you don't test bullet proof vests on live subjects as step 1. I need to get good with a sword before I start swinging one that can sever limbs off.

This. There isn't a community here to be able to role play. We (well I) am too old to just gather a bunch of non-lethal weapons and people and commence beating the crap out of one another. Essentially, I need formal and self training in bladed arts, then I want to collect dated weapons that have no practical use in today's society as a hobby. Men love hobbies. I'm down to 3, time for another.

No shame in getting one of these for dicking around and practicing technique. They're pretty fun too, but obviously unrealistic in both weight and scale of actual weapons. Glad I have a little brother to justify purchasing one of these silly things.

Have multiple of these...Had to take them away from the kids because they hurt each other, then they hurt me when I wasn't looking, then I hurt them, then I hurt my wife.

My wife threw them away because the "children" couldn't be trusted with them. For a piece of pvc wrapped in foam, they are freaking fun.
