I’m not saying it’s right or anything but like… it is what it is. For the most part on Horizon I just enjoy running content with my friends, or fish, or level casually, or just chat with LS mates. It's a shame there's no fishing, leveling, or chatting in retail :-/

It's because it's not a company and is run by volunteers with no professional certainties that players - or rather anyone working with a volunteer organization for that matter - should place themselves at high alert.

Yeah...that's the point. It's a problem. You shouldn't need to be on high alert or have to worry about internal politics when playing a video game.

Sylvebits said: »
What I'm referring to is the same group of people who get overly friendly with server owners/admins/devs, to a point where I'm sure they've benefitted from insider information or actions. But then the moment the relationship(platonically) breaks down, suddenly it's corruption and nothing was there fault. And it is corruption for sure, but those people had no problem benefiting from it until it didn't.

Yeah...and both parts of this equation are a problem. You shouldn't benefit from being buddies with the server OR be punished for breaking that friendship. The fact that you can find out ToDs or get items from them or whatever is part of the problem. No part of this relationship makes any sense in an MMO.

Competing with the people running the server (or those people's friends) for items, NMs, gil, etc. makes no sense.

They could honestly do a whole case study on it. It's like some cult like thing too, they get baited in by nostalgia and later indoctrinated into that p server think. Like who really considers stuff from 75 era somehow the pinnacle of gaming content? I have seen countless videos where people literally waited 30~40m for a single player to join their party to begin exping on those p servers... That is somehow fun?

That stuff was fun as a kid because we were all experiencing it for the first time etc. Now that we are all adults with so many options for entertainment, people are willingly doing that crap again? So weird honestly. The indoctrinated part is because a lot of them act like retail is dead or garbage as they do anything to make that server look good. They could do all those boring things on retail where we have an even worse EXP grind, low drop rate events, etc. All of that stuff is still there, yet they are dinking away on a fake server with "new" content. Lying to themselves as they join parties "Hi Party ^0^" like they are back in time. So weird, so weird.

Most of them honestly think a 75 cap server would be such a great idea in current era... so profitable. Yet the majority of them quit after getting to 75, not even touching the "events" with poorly copied NMs. It's honestly just a complete shame that so called fans of FFXI are praising and supporting a fake server that leeched assets off the hard work of the people who made this beautiful game the work of art it is.

I still laugh that the one guy made a youtube channel, acting like that server would be the next biggest thing so he could get youtube fame. Then he ends up quitting and criticizing them on his way out after defending them so hardcore, even on this forum.

Not sure if you're just making a general broad statement about retail players, or if you have no idea who TF you're talking to but...oof. You couldn't possibly be more off-base in my particular case.

when are you going to grow up and get a life? ive never come across anyone so obsessed and unhinged over their own subjective preference. every single horizon post/youtube video you will find draylo crying and gaslighting people about something he obviously knows nothing about. "they get baited in by nostalgia and later indoctrinated into that p server think" how do you not hear how cringe and unhinged you come off lying about something simply because u dont like it? you cant get indoctrinated by a hobby. people choose to spend their free time on what they do because they enjoy it. "The indoctrinated part is because a lot of them act like retail is dead or garbage as they do anything to make that server look good." i seriously doubt you even know what that word means...
"Most of them honestly think a 75 cap server would be such a great idea in current era... so profitable" i dont know where youre getting this data from (more gaslighting) even though there is clearly a demand for it as horizon still has around the same number of people logged in as the most populated retail server, arguably more since multiboxing isnt allowed.
"I still laugh that the one guy made a youtube channel, acting like that server would be the next biggest thing so he could get youtube fame" no one in the history of youtube creators has ever started a channel with the intention of getting youtube "fame" by streaming a dead 20+ year old mmo. its almost like you're just not capable of even criticizing without adding an insane amount of gaslighting just for the sake of crying about it.
as someone whos paid their sub to retail for 20+ years now im literally embarrassed to share something in common with such an unhinged man child.

As opposed to running the same Sheol and Sortie routes every day between the 20 minutes of new content that gets added every 6 or so months?

Most of retail is a wasteland outside of the bigger population servers. I logged onto Bismarck a few times during the last login campaign and not once were there more than 600 players online. The only time you find player counts that low on Horizon are 30 minutes after maintenance. Horizon has more actual people playing on it than Asura. It actually feels like a game with people playing it.

Retail makes for a much worse MMO experience these days because 95% of the time you're playing solo or in a lowman static, half of which are bot accounts.

I enjoyed my time at HorizonXI, however I always felt that I won't go to far beyond leveling Bard to 60 and doing Nation Missions, CoP, I had lots of fun doin it again, However the nostalgia faded away, also I'm not into joining ls and work on points again to lot stuff and attendance again.

It takes me seconds to post, I don't "seek out" anything. Its always more sad to me you pop into these threads religiously, without fail. You must have some kind of stock in that server, theres no way you put this much effort into something like this by going to a forum of a game you despise and don't even play anymore. I at least have an excuse because I post here regularly since I was a kid.

I've been helping people who returned do older content, I still enjoy doing the wide breath of content this game has. I don't need to force a handicap and lock myself to 75 to do old content. I also take my sweet time, I don't grind anything.

Out of how many servers? You have freeloaders who aren't even paying, that doesn't show much population if you ask me. Can't use the bot excuse, I see returning players all the time. Retail is a worse experience even though you don't even get all the storyline on that shitty p server lol, you heard it here. If someone wanted to experience the real game, they would go to retail now a shitty copy of it with barely 10% of the content. Nobody is forcing people to play solo, but I've seen plenty of people soloing on that p server with beastmaster pets.

FFXI has been out of 75 cap literally years more than it ever was in. The game has had so much content and updates and all you focus on is dragons aery, pathetic lol.

Why would I only care about a small handful of years compared to the entire life of the game, all the incredible things they have added since then... I was a kid during those days and I remember wishing they would add some of the crap we have now. Fighting alongside NPCs and seeing them use their special moves, fighting hard mode bosses like Ultima/Omega at the same time. Getting to use Odin. Almost everything I wished for they have added over the years, including an expansion w/SOA. I'll never forget that night when they announced it how happy I was. Yet because I don't care to relive that brief time period somehow that is pathetic? lol

I find it more pathetic people can convince themselves they are having fun *** EXPING, lmao. Like really, something most of us dreaded having to do, these dummies are convincing themselves its fun again "hi party, derp ^0^" as they bop to a 50 xp crab killing party, unreal.

Let's be real, private servers are trash. All of them. Horizon is the most notable, but will soon enough be replaced by another similarly trash server with the same bad faith actors engaging in the same drama torama (on that note, there are vanishingly few people who play these illegal servers, yet they still somehow manage to have their own drama subreddit)

It's not just that these servers, by virtue of being free if nothing else, attract cancerous inedividuals (aka a-holes) and widespread toxicity - the actual game experience itself is shockingly poor. Bugs are widespread, only a modicum of the story actually exists and even that much is often broken, there is no semblance of job balance and all the 75 content you once enjoyed and loved no longer exists in any capacity.

Horizon is awash with Maat's Caps, a select squad of individuals who essentially control the economy and content itself being hopelessly, pointlessly outdated. It never tried to be "era" FFXI from the beginning, but now it's scarcely recognisable.

All this would be fine - arguably it's a positive that private servers are there to attract the bad faith actors - but it's harmful to Vana'diel as the OP's post illustrates. Horizon cultists advertise the server far and wide, on Youtube videos of old FFXI nostalgia music, on social media, everywhere. Yet they never mention retail FFXI is a thing, nor do they mention it's an infinitely superior thing even if one has to pay.

So instead you have folks, like the OP, who go to Horizon and have their opinions on FFXI colored by the experience. I can't tell you how many times I've talked to people who have dunked on XI as a whole because they've played Horizon and the experience has been trash.

FFXI has zero advertisement, that's an SE problem, but these private servers compound that by offering a vastly inferior product and masquarading as literally anything other than some neckbeard's Persona palace.

Asura.Mavira said: »
The private server orbiters are like a cult and will defend every little criticism like it’s a personal attack on them.

Or, as in this case, completely ignore the OP's perfectly rational experiences and try and deflect by attacking Retail.

No crying, you really underestimate the amount of effort I put into these posts. I couldn't care less, I just find it funny and when I'm bored I check out youtube. When I'm on youtube, I see something that says FFXI - Grinding Content!

I click on the video, as I like to support any XI content creator by giving a like/sub, and its some neckbeard getting all giddy that he got 50 xp from a crab. I'm like oh this is not retail, yet its labeled as that. Then I look at the comments and see people saying "kuwai, so cool, i love this bro good job!" Like some of them seriously look like bots. I then leave my comment, if someone responds I will too. Takes about as much effort as literally the countless drones of dummies that go to literally any FFXI video with any kind of view count (seriously go look, go look at mrhappy ones he did recently) that will 100% guranteed have a shill or bot from this server advertising. "Derp derp, have you heard of the cool p server w here you can relive your glory days, its so good!"

What a surprise anytime someone mentions it here they have the defense force out in full, really suspicious too lol

In my point of view those people are all detriments to the real game. It not about having a subjective preference, they are actively contributing to the decline of the real game that I love. If I can leave a comment, I will, doesn't cost me anything. You are free to block me whenever you like. I still find it funny they hold onto that fake /sea all count like a bible. Yes, reassure yourself you are in the right place.

the irony in you telling me you dont use personal attacks, and then having the absolute lack of self awareness to tell me relax its just a video game while you seethe at your computer over someone playing a different game than you. show me any data that would suggest horizon is taking players away from retail. ill wait. show me any data that suggests they are spoofing their /sea all. you have been crying the same lies that u pull out of ur *** for years. literally since horizon launched you are on every single video that has been uploaded to youtube making up lies about it and threatening people you are going to write SE a letter to get it shut down. its really pathetic that you cannot wrap your head around the fact that people enjoy different things. anyone that disagrees with you is dismissed as a bot or a shill for the server as if they have anything to gain from it... like i said i have paid my sub to this game for 20 years. sometimes im in the mood to cap haste with some trusts and mow stuff down by myself on retail. sometimes i feel like enjoying a more social experience that is more akin to how the game used to be. theres no way to block you since you literally are crying like a petulant child in every website/forum where horizon or any private server is mentioned. i have never met a single person on any private server that plays because its free. not saying they dont exist, but from my EXPERIENCE it has just never happened. people play on horizon and other private servers specifically because it is NOT retail, not because its free and anyone that chooses to play BECAUSE its free would not be paying 15-20 a month in the first place, so again it is not taking any players away from retail.
" its FREE. Its no indication of anything profit wise lol" being free is no indication of it NOT being profitable either. it goes both ways. league of legends is free and makes between 1-2 billion dollars a year. what a braindead argument to think 2-3k ppl playing the same game for years could not have the potential to be profitable. if SE made an era server that had more players logged in than asura are u saying it wouldnt be profitable???? you literally make no sense. just crying for attention because ur favorite game isnt as popular as it used to be. grow up. the only thing killing retail is time and SE's lack of interest in pushing it.

It's ironic that the people who put thousands of hours for free into try save XI many years ago (when they thought it was going to close) by making a server emulator, are having their work used as a weapon against the game Square Enix is still supporting and that they loved so much. This is why none of these people have updated the emulator for many years now (and certainly not since horseshi7 launched).

Not only has the dude that started the server ninja promoted turned it into a small business where he sells gil to a handful of whales on the server, but it's buggy, broken and staffed by incompetent inflatable headed buffoons.

The people running these servers do not care about the game, if not this they would have downloaded the emulator for another game and be running that instead (probably wow). All they care about is using it as a vehicle for their own ends, their own ego and have plebs worship them that think they did the work (when as said above other people did it all for them and they just downloaded it from a github) and in many cases their own bank balance when they use a text prompt to make a billion gil as the server owner and then sell it on rmt trading sites.

Private servers did not expand the fanbase, it created continual attempted cannibalization and friction within it across all XI content that tries to promote the game (to be fair this only happend after H, the older server users had respect). Many of the people who went to Horizon were the biggest scumbags in the community, and if they just sat in their own sewer discord it would not be a problem cause everyone would be glad they are gone. However, instead they need to try keep their dying server with no content alive, by constantly fishing for more people to come look at their fake plastic riddles they got in 2 kills.

In many places that still care about the game this isn't so easy to do this, so they have to try farm it under the radar with memberberry posts on reddit. Here though, they are allowed to farm all they want, infuriating that this is still allowed on a fansite.

Despite all the complaints, it is very much true that you have more ability to group and chat on private servers than on retail. Bots and multiboxing have eroded the social environment on retail to the point that very few people actually want that sort of experience any more.

That's the only way private servers are better though; the content is trash and people are delusional about it. But, it's still enough for some: a MMO isn't really a MMO without teamwork.

So that’s the thing, like Thorny said most people just tend not wanting to even engage in the social aspect when it’s easier to just duo box/trust but I’d say it’s still very there on a server such as Bahamut if you seek it out. Myself and the OP were doing Delfkutt climb and ran into several others who we grouped up with and then we proceeded to do magicite together as well. Was the first time I heard that POL friend invite chime in a long time.

I have played both Eden and Horizon and there was social xp parties which I enjoyed but it’s nothing like they were 20 years ago. For most players doing XP/events within a small ls is fine but once you move into the private server hellscape that is HNM you begin to see a lot of the social issues. Mega linkshells with 100s of members where you’re lucky if you make it into the main alliance to kill even if you’re the claim party.

The linkshell I was in had both head GMs, one of the community managers, multiple devs etc. It’s no secret who they are as players either and it turned into one of the most toxic experiences I’ve witnessed in the 23 years I’ve played, it was mostly the same friend group that bounces around together from server to server. Most players probably won’t experience things such as that if they just play with friends and avoid HNM. Even so I’ll always suggest retail over any private server with the current state they are in.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to look at my post and contributing to the discussion.

I'm reading through every comment closely.

I also want to comment I like how you can check and review each person's profiles and past forum posts. It helps me understand where people are coming from and what their general language and attitude is. I don't take anything personally for that matter. I respect everyone's own personal experience or why they might feel hurt and triggered that I made a bias post.

The infographic on the other hand I tried to be fair as another person would put it. I imagined if I had to start over again, I wish I read this review. For another person similar to me.

So my background is: I had not played this game. I don't relate to people who have given 20+ years of their life. Whereas as I, it was 2 years, but even then, on and off.

I'm going to be frank, if I had to sit my friends and parents down IRL and explain this game and what I went through and seen, I'd be doing so with a lot of embarrassment, they'd think my IQ dropped immensely (not to say that because there's people who look down at people who game) but it's just because, again, I don't really invest in social circles too much or drama. I always detach at some point quickly and do my own thing.

So when I did approach this game and community for that matter, it was very innocent for me.

I idealized people thinking they either thought similar to me to why they might play a game... for just a game to zone out and a type of escapism.. relax.. make some friends.

Also the majority are much older crowd, so I immediately thought there was a level of maturity, safety and protectiveness.

It's just not entirely the case here. It's probably also due to an entirely different culture I'm dealing with when it's online than I'm used to and growing up with.

Not everyone has built those type of traits and probably still stuck in a primary phase of developing it.

I had to have people from the private community with years of experience walk through with me on voice chat that it's literally a dedicated hardcore fan base. Like they have given their whole life to this game. They integrated so much that they identify their whole identity or what makes them feel like an important individual. Because I just lack the sympathy to understand that. I can't put myself in people's shoes with this game.

For me the private server game just by content, was 10/10 and retail server game is going to end up being 10/10 by the end of it? Not because of the attention to all the incredible details of what goes into content. But it fulfills the main goal: I zone out, I'm not stressed, I get to be in a world of fantasy, and hangout with friends. It is fun. Once I'm done. I log out and don't think about it as much anymore and go on with my daily life.

Even with the HNM scenes I just showed up. I was not personally invested in the clique circle. I know they are people I would not hangout IRL. You just can kind of know the vibes and like who you sync with or repel. It's nothing personal. I wasn't going to be friends with everyone and I just like that feeling I am not obligated to a group but I just have very few close friends instead.

So with all the different types of harassments towards me and others, I knew it wasn't a normal occurrence. It was blatantly really weird and messed up levels that could get you quickly expelled out of high school or even cybercrime levels when staff are all accumulated in the one LS and with there history of instigating those types of abuse in the past.

It was too great of a grey area that, again, would not repeat in under a retail settings due to laws set in place.

I initially planned to silently walk away like others because I mean that's what you just do. You disappear from the game and no one knows or why you left.

I do have people in the game and outside who are instinctive and want to protect me and so they went to higher levels with that for me: THAT by the way.. only made it so much worse as that's where I became vulnerable, mishandled completely and unprofessionally disregarding all "Code of Conduct" & "Conflict of Interest" section etc. All stated on the website.

It doesn't even exist when there's 5+ different HNMs and lead LS leader is a head GM and best friends with the clique LS. And when any other staff should've gotten involved immediately, did not happen that way, it was only and purely oozing "Conflict of Interest". And all the leaders were sending mixed signals to me in more confusion.

On top of that, people gossip rampantly to me. And I mean I don't even think staff and developers really know how much they are gossiped about and can come from their closest people and fans who still play on the server.. so disliked or spoken ill about. People ARE willing to put up with the behavior, be silent about it, and make sure they don't get caught with their view so they dont get banned. But if the whole private persona and architecture was removed.. Like I am being constantly told that staff cannot be trusted.

And I'm just sitting behind my computer screen playing a video game, and I'm sitting here going.. "What?" I literally had no idea what I got entangled in.

And then I get even more harassed JUST for addressing the problem of there being an abuse culture going on.

Fans and HNMLS members are so distorted in their viewpoint they misinterpret me like I'm trying to trying take down their egos.

I left the LS and server completely out of respect for others if they want to continue operating in that way. But mostly for myself. Before anything even escalated. I planned to initially leave silently.

I am trying to communicate there are clear problems and I'm not the first person in all private server history who has pointed this out.

And it makes me very uncomfortable that there's people who go back more than a decade with all this history with one another. Even lifelong enemies. You can read it up on all the forums too. It's like being in a mafia movie. And I'm here very unaware and caught into all these types of unfamiliar clique energy and just disconnect. It just takes the whole professionalism completely out of the equation.

It is literally not the case like I am trying to rob people of the game. I point these problems out so you can improve so you can desire to do better and the outcome is you keep people and know how to draw in more people by fixing these mistakes.

I do believe in Law of Attraction. If you guys want to keep funneling in certain types of people and push out people like me, that's fine.

That's why I'm so gladly and I mean ecstatic and relieved to pay my subscription now because I am paying someone to literally do their "job." Because they are working for me to make sure I'm satisfied with their product. It removes all the mental leaps and degenerate variables you just don't get when it's lawfully operating company.

When you're under a private server that is just NOT the case. There are other motives at play beyond "just love and huge fan of the game." The psychological analysis people have had to feed me like it's meant to fulfill something missed out in their teenage years.

And it all takes away completely from looking at staff like staff. That stopped existing for me completely. And HNMLS from just being HNMLS. And a game that's meant to be just a game for me.

Like I couldn't focus on the game anymore and towards a Herald's Gaiters.

And I lost all respect for private severs at that point and have to separate myself because I CLEARLY do not belong. I don't understand whatever that whole energy and warped mentality people are in. But it's not a normal game.

I've tried other Free-to-Play MMOs that are legally liable and it is for a fact, not that.

I can log on. Game. Escape for a moment. Log out.

This is a product for me. I'm not the most hardcore fan. I could review this like I went to my regular mall off of 4th street.

But yea I hope to never go through the mental leaps of what I had to or would want that on any other individual who came into the private server scene mislead into thinking it was like any other legally liable game.

It got too much going on. It's way too dark and heavy for me to deal with.

All of this stuff robs the magic away from the game. The fact I have to think about what kind of people are behind little cute avatars is far too disturbing to me. What I subjected myself to. It's like I went and downloaded an illegal movie off a website and now dealing with twenty different viruses and it keeps replicating. Like I'm done.

It's shifted everything that I won't even complain about paying subscription anymore because I just know what I'm going to get as I've always known: A game and a peace of mind.
