As for whats really going on, this is collectivist vs individualist pure and simple. Collectivists see everything and everyone as groups to be put in boxes and ascribed attributes to. To them we aren't individuals, that's a mark of the hated capitalist, instead we are all labels, white, brown, black, man, women, rich, poor, educated, non-educated, homosexual, transgender, and so forth. A person doesn't have rights, instead they have groups they are assigned to and those groups have privileges. In the minds of the collectivists the nominee is merely a figurehead, a hollow shell and mouthpiece put forth to do the will of the collective. Communism demands this as all must submit to the will of the state.

Think of the liberals as the borg and all their actions make sense.

Individualists at the exact opposite, every person is an individual with their own set of beliefs, backgrounds, thoughts and decisions. Each person acts for themselves and the collective can go *** itself.
