FFXI is serious business if you can't finish first on the parse you finish last. You might as well quit now and save yourself the grief.

I parse everything even when I kill mobs for Ambu.

It is not a vertical progression game

Except it is, a level 30 weapon is stronger then a level 5 weapon while a level 99 weapon is stronger then the level 30 weapon. What you did was argue the degree of the slope not that the slope didn't exist.

Now go defeat CL139 content with a level 1 onion sword to demonstrate how it's not a vertical progression system.

Oh Sae-chan~

When a Bard needs G.horn, harp, and honor march, three instruments to accomplish their job, that's horizontal progression.

It's not the same blatant horizontal progression as back at 75 cap when items like sniper's rings or haubergeons were the rage. Just because it isn't so in your face that the developers had to change the NM drops to rare/ex items to allow an alternative acquisition method of effectively the same item.

When there is no universal best in slot such that one piece can be worn 100% of the time, that is not vertical progression.

When people have to write entire lua files (or actively write out elaborate ingame macros) to play the game such that gear swaps automatically to make use of the variety of gear that they have, that is not vertical progression.

Just because developers had to dumb down the game significantly such that a lvl 1 with trusts can lvl all the way to 99 with a disregard for gear almost entirely doesn't suddenly make it a vertical progression game.

When Defending Ring is still the best -damage taken ring, or Suppanomimi is still a relevant piece, that's a sign of horizontal progression.

When I still need a specific piece of gear to get one extra utsusemi shadow that I would not otherwise use all the time, that's horizontal progression.

When a WAR gets to debate between what weapon type (not even just the specifics of individual weapons in that category), that is horizontal progression.

Just because they made it easier to get to the end game, doesn't mean it changed suddenly. The meta changed, but not the foundations. People still want to look down on others, that's the mentality that leads to people to want to look at it as a vertical progression game. What you're describing is experience compounded with materialism. Experience does not equate to vertical progression. Needing a variety of things to have effectively the best set regardless of circumstance is a sign of horizontal progression. There are players that are more adept or have played longer or have more knowledge of the game, but that doesn't suddenly change the format of the game.

A vertical progression is: get max level, get all the gear with the highest of my most prioritized stats. Look at the gear in Final Fantasy XIV. You're not going to find Bard Songs on specific pieces of equipment. You're not going to find the variety of stat types there are in Final Fantasy XI, just look at Ambuscade capes.

Actually... thats vertical progression, literally. Those are all vertical upgrades of lower tier gear. Same with everything else you mentioned. Unless your making the statement all those jobs can use level 1 weapons and be just as effective.

I believe you have a very flawed idea of vertical vs horizontal progression.

You are picking and choosing again. If you weren't cherry picking and applying huge levels of absolutism to one side you'd see it's mixed.

Also moonlight ring better for any job that can wear it

So what one BRD instrument can a BRD wear full-time and do an equivalent job as a BRD with their best weapons? What replaces 4 song harp? Pretty sure Daurdabla came out before Terpander and they're both the same level. Pretty sure Terpander was created so as to quell the cries of those that didn't want to make Daurdabla. They literally sing dummy songs such that they can overwrite them with G.horn.

I gave very clear and specific examples keeping the history of the game in mind. If the game was truly a vertical progression the idea of a REMA would've died off long ago. Again, look at Final Fantasy XIV as a comparison of what a vertical progression is and compare it to Final Fantasy XI.

I corrected the original absolute statement. I left minimal room for back pedaling. What you call cherry picking I call giving you the most rudimentary, clear, example as you're still grasping for straws as you try to tell me basic role playing game elements dictate a vertical progression. The fact that you can 1-99 with just trusts and then everything becomes entirely gear based is like saying that because the tutorial was one way, the rest of the game is just as simple.

I would feel bad for their girlfriend if I could delude myself into believing they could get one without paying by the hour. Since braggarts of all persuasions typically suffer from micropenis.

It's just the typical trolls, almost fell for it. The mods are very selective on who they deal with so we just ignore them.
