Why on Earth/Vana'diel/Azeroth would you necro bump this for no bloody reason?
That fact needed to be stated. Hey, you're contributing to the bump. Thanks.

Most password are stored hashed with a salt so the password is not retrievable even with physical access to the drive it stored on. if any electronic services stores your password so any program and/or person can read it you should not be using the services, its bad data security Offline

most of the comments were tl;dnr imo, but I'm just curious does anyone even know how majority of these "hacks" are taking place?
When I hear the word "hack" I immediately think of a program used (trojan, keylogger, etc) used to STEAL a person's information without them knowing about it, and then taking their account from them. I do not consider being a noob and giving your login/pw away to a site/imposter as a legitimate description for the term "hacked". But regardless, I would be interested to find out how the majority of these ppls accts were hacked. Just like any Tom and Jerry game, you must know your enemy and how they will strike in order to prevent a future assault...or you can be like that douchebag lolPC Joshua from the movie WarGames and be all "the only way to win...is not to play" (which ironically is the pigeonhole the hackees are put into >.<) *supadupa wisdom* Bahamut.Tokidoki

The hackers then hack the game related websites and steal your password from them. Note to hackers out there: My password was the same until I watched that video but it is no longer so don't even try it, thanks you RMT king. When AOL was born, they did spoke about how unwise "above statement" I'm very surprise that some players need it to watch "King of RMT' Video to find this out now.... Offline

Thanks for the info. ^_^ Happy hacking...er...hunting. At this point, there wouldn't be much point in hacking anyone's FFXI account other than to piss him off/make him quit.
Once upon a time, Minidragon's account was something people could envy, not anymore. And even then, there wasn't an active hacking campaign. What was said above is the most logical answer, people need to be smarter when it comes to passwords. If I was previously hacked (they stole one of my login passwords and address and used to change my other password) and reformatted my hard drive and use a antivirus, can that hacker still hack my account? I know that they hacked my account from me clicking on a website, but I haven't done anything of that sort since I reformatted my computer and reinstalled the game.

Change your password on your se account to something long even if they use a program or there brain to find your password the longer it is the harder,or i should say it like this the longer the password the longer it will take them.Giving u more time to find there bug and remove it before to much data is stole. Then there is account stealing by using your email to send a password reset and do it like that. When this happens the only way u can get your account back with out asking for help from the company is getting on your email and sending a new reset email before they change the email on the account. Then at that time make a good and long password on your email.Heck it would not hurt to not use the same email again for safety. But yes a protection program is a great idea even if u never go online with said computer. I believe it was a keylogger. I changed my passwords multiple times since then. I just had a thought when updating my pc when I physically typed in one for one of the passwords instead of the built-in keyboard feature. It just makes me worried that they have my address and can steal it again just by having SE resetting for them. If I get hacked again, SE isn't going to rollback my account again even if I have a security token. Leviathan.Comeatmebro

SE is very harsh about resetting these days, they won't get it reset without at least CD keys, and I've heard of quite a few cases where even that doesn't work and you need to mail in the notary form.
I wouldn't be worried about it, just be more careful with your browsing habits. Can I ask a true honest question?
What kind of websites steal passwords from Final Fantasy XI? I mean, I could only think of botting/gil buying sites that wants to be malicious to players. I honestly dont think any regular porn site or whatever would wanna steal final fantasy xi passwords. Hades.Tripster said: » Can I ask a true honest question? One desktop (HP Omni 27Q series) for my online games, music, school projects and surf the web.
(2007 HP desktop)2nd one; Surf porn, download music, videos and porn , pictures I download from e-mails etc etc. These 2 have Norton, but they serve their purpose... Been doing this technique since AOL was born... Not hard at all to keep ***separate. Just saying. Stored user Name & stored password is beneficial, Instead typing ***on KB. Hmmmmmm
So logged in today to see my character was deleted, along with my mule (mule's on a separate PlayOnline and SE account). I recently changed my password for both accounts, so I have no idea how anyone would have found it. I logged into my SE account, says my content IDs are active, but they say Character instead of Gimp or Jic... which makes it look like a deleted character. I really have no idea what the hell's going on, I'm scanning my computer as I type this, but I doubt there's anything on it. Doesn't even seem typical of getting hacked, but I could be wrong... SE support and ***'s not open until tomorrow... so just wondering if it could be that I did get hacked or I'm just HELP I AM TRAPPED IN 2006 PLEASE SEND A TIME MACHINE. Offline

Malwarebytes just found something called Stolen.Data, so I take it that's it... I also take it I'm not really safe to play on this computer anymore, even if I do end up getting the account back?
Good luk getting it back. A buddy of mine had his account hacked and his main char. deleted from the account. Pretty close to the same senario, too. He changed his password then a few days later woke up to a deleted char.
