Why's everyone so down about this? 3 new big updates in may August and November then it's "ordinary" updates. You can decipher their messages in many ways. Might not be as bad as you think.
Theres 1 more year of Xbox 360 and ps2. You know we now up go Xbox one whatever that is called right? Can't keep playing on Xbox forever.
For me I'm excited about those big updates then after that checking out the mobile version then after that who knows...... ? Maybe some of you will start a family and no time for games? Enjoy the moment.

For PC yes, but will they never add anything to the mobile version? What is the point in developing one if so? It sounds as if they are also thinking about dropping PC service shortly after the release of the mobile app.
They can't have one game in two different platforms with differences in content.

Very well put. And the "wrapping up conclusion" content is going to be really nice to play, but it's almost like...going on a European trip with that terminal friend. You'll make some great memories and have a great time, but in the back of your head is going to be looming the fact that this is the end of an era, especially for those of us who have been playing non-stop since NA release.

They did manage to wrap up one thing though, I should give them that. The official forums aren't beta anymore. Next in line: linkshell community final version in... 2020... if there is any linkshell left to be shown by then.

There's no such thing as "ordinary updates". Everyone is so down because there will be continued support once these final 3 expansions come into effect, but no new content. Game's with no new content have very limited re-playability. Once the 3 expansions are finished, then what? What reason is there to play unless to revisit content that you have already completed time and again.
It's a very different situation playing a game with no new content and continually re-doing content to better yourself to playing a game that you know will never have any new content and will eventually die out, whether it is a week, a month or a year from that point in time.
Essentially, the illusion of eternity has been shattered.

It doesn't sound like they'll be doing ordinary updates after November. It sounds like they'll just be doing minor tweaks and bug fixes. You won't be getting new items, events, quests, etc. They'll just be maintaining the status quo. Whether that's good or bad is up to the individual.

Yeah but they are simply closing those avenues. There won't be a PS4 or Xbone version.

I can't say I'm interested in a mobile version, so that doesn't appeal to me at all.

I will be sad to see FFXI end, but at the same time I'm delighted that they are producing a storyline conclusion and not just unceremoniously pulling the plug.

Basically what we're looking at is finishing the content in November and then watching people slowly trickle away.

So is the mobile version a separate game? I was under the impression it was just another platform to use. I really doubt the game wouldn't get new content if the mobile takes off.

My thoughts exactly. It doesn't make sense to stop adding new content to a game while updating it on a different platform. If I can log in from both devices, there would be a paradox... a paradox... Maybe Promathia possessed Matsui...

So they will try selling an online game in intensive care and expect people to jump at it despite already knowing that the game isn't going to see any new content... Sounds like a plan.
Edit: They should just make this a single player game when they release the mobile app and stick BCs to a co-op mode system while they are it.

As shocking as the news is, I'm also one of the hopeful fools who keeps seeing inconsistencies with the announcement. I guess this could be the reason I feel an odd calmness about the apparent end of FFXI, but at the same time they're making choices that seem as though the game isn't going to completely die. All in all, for being a "grand finale" they sure are opening a few new loose threads...
But I suppose we'll get more answers in a couple days, once they respond to our questions.

Is it me or did it feel like they hinted at possibly adding mini expansions like "Crystalline Prophecy" in the future as well? I could be crazy - who knows....

22 Assaults, 15k Nyzul tokens and a bit over 15k Alexandrites left here for my Nirvana.
Concluding story aside, that'll be the last goal that remains in this game for me.
Once all development has stopped there's little reason for me to linger, any social contacts I have built have other ways to reach me.
So likely no new ilvl increase. What's the point of raising job point cap past 10 anyway. Most casuals will never even get the 410JP it requires to currently max out Jp and i'm positive this new content wont be hard enough to warrant even bothering.

SE makes my brain hurt at times. Though I doubt they will be on time with their expansion release dates, they usually never are...I would hope they would come out with something new for their mobile apps, then again I'm not sure how I feel about it. I find most mobile apps to be cumbersome, so it will be interesting with FFXI.

Ive played this game before COP came out and now that its ending i have a anxious feeling inside.

In a way, I'm glad that they're giving XI a 'proper' Final Fantasy treatment and giving it an ending (don't start with the XIII stuff lol)

They didn't say it would be "onto ordinary updates" they said it would go into bug fix/system tweak updates. So imagine the updates becoming nothing but WS adjustments with no gear, no skirmish or w/e event of the month and likely no new gear(maybe event gear because pretty things are nice) but don't expect anything useful or higher than level 1.
Does this mean the end of the game? Well technically that all depends on how long the player base decides to continue playing, but it definitely means there will be a large lack of content and likely many more people falling off of the game once they become bored or cap out.

That looks pretty clear to me. Bug fixes and balance adjustments. Ordinary updates we have now includes changes to gameplay and character development while also adding new content, although mostly recycled stuff.
I think the mobile client could actually work if they can make a playable UI. It wouldn't be receiving content updates anymore, but it has over a decade of content that is mostly soloable with Trusts now. Phone games are shitty and superficial. FFXI has a decade of depth just in terms of story, which instantly puts it at the front of the field as long as it's reasonably playable. Add on that there's an MMO component and you potentially have a winner.
In order to be successful they need to:
1) Make a simplified (possibly customizable) mobile UI that doesn't suck
2) Bundle the PC version of FFXI with the mobile version
3) Reduce monthly prices. Nobody is going to pay $14/mo for a phone game.
