I think you don't even need to purchase these items to perform optimally. "Average" players always look for the easy way to reach certain goals. And if they're going to implement a certain system not unlike the ones in free MMO's in XIV, SE is going to cash in.

The industry is pretty split at the moment. The only "traditional" subscription shop to try and launch a foray into the "free to play" + microtransaction world is Sony Online, with FreeRealms. I'm not sure how well they're doing, but it certainly hasn't taken off like wildfire.

By comparison, Korean MMO's have been using the microtransaction model for the better part of 15 years now. Their users are habituated to it, and would likely reject a pure subscription model like US games.

There's clearly a whole lot of money to be made over on the free/microtransaction side of the fence. They're literally bathing in cash right now. You can't blame a lot of traditional game companies for looking over longingly and nervously eyeing their own bottom lines.

The problem is, traditional gamers (like most of you) tend to embrace MMO's for their egalitarian model where the only currency is time investment. So it's very scary for a big company like SquareEnix to shove all their existing customers away to leap at the brass ring of an alternate business plan. They might very well fall flat on their face, and end up blowing the whole thing. So I doubt they're going to go that far with FF14.

But if SE wants to introduce the free/microtransaction model it would have to mean, NO MONTHLY FEES.

I'm here in San Diego. Here's a photo I took up the coastline on Christmas morning and stitched together as an experiment with Windows 7 panorama-maker. Clicky for big version.

As for those gloating over using ad-blocker... please, if you like this site: don't. We try very hard to prevent any ads getting through that are malicious or misleading. We block any ads with audio, etc. We really try to be as unobtrusive as possible.

But if you're outright blocking our ads, you're denying us the revenue to pay for the load you're putting on the site, and so basically stealing from us.

We were originally going to make FFXIAH a subscription service, requiring membership to use. (Like parts of Allakhazam.) We decided to go for ads instead, because we thought it would be less selfish. But if you guys just block the ads anyway, I wonder how you expect us to stay in business.

To be fair alot of the cali coastline looks kinda like that. Some with more beach some with more rocks some a bit more or less cliff but mostly the same

NorCal is equally beautiful, but often cold and foggy as well. I can surf in year-round sun around here, and in only a springsuit in winter. Up north I need a fullsuit even in summer.

"Donations" button over on the left menu, and thanks. =) How much is entirely up to you.

I know the ads are annoying, but they keep the site operating. If you guys wanna block them, at least consider throwing a few bucks at our Paypal box to help offset the costs.

I actually like the foggy. And it isn't as cold or foggy if you don't live too far up or right on the bay. I used to live in Santa Rosa... while you can't surf year round it's still decent temp. Well gets hot in summer but what you expect?

Too far north well it gets kinda lamish. Granted beautiful scenary but like no people hardly at all and more like southern oregon.
