There aren't enough people working, because Corporation Cut Corners cuts corners.
So there's no one at the actual "manned" express checkout.
You get two cashiers checking out the long lines of people with 150 items.
So the people with 150 items decide they'll do it themselves at the self checkout.
But they don't know how to find the PLU for their produce, or the little scrub brush they want doesn't have a price tag, or they're just mentally deficient and can't follow the instructions on the screen about scanning their *** coupons before selecting a payment method or whatever.
And oh man, Cthulhu help you if you forget what day it is and accidentally go shopping on the first of the month.

Well, not just that, because if it was just that, it wouldn't be bad. Just go shopping in the morning at times people who don't have jobs wouldn't dream of getting up.
Or just avoid Walmart. Those folks tend to like Walmart more than other grocery stores.
The real danger is the Sexa-through-Octogenarions. Their Social Security/Retirement/Pension/etc. payments all come the first of the month too. Because they will get up at 6:00 a.m. to flock to the store by 7:30 a.m. to buy cat food and lentils and they will stand around clogging the aisles discussing little Timmy's church play.
Of course, there's the opposite of this to me that despite how angry they make me, I count them as honored enemies, because if I make it to that age, you can be damn sure I'm going to do what I want and *** what some young guy in a hurry has to say about it. If I want to buy my fruit with a coupon and then return it because it wasn't flavorful, then I will by damn.
Similarly, I will follow some senior citizen in traffic enraged that they've got a tricket out classic Corvette that they won't drive more than 10 MPH under the speed limit. But all the time I'm raging, I'm also going, "good for you".
...I think I may just be a very contrary person.
