New PC (High-End) Help
By oncura 2011-12-14 19:48:25
Socket 1155 is for your average enthusiast and your basic machines. Yo can get basic boards for for your i3/i5. But you can also get nice boards for the i7 with a lot of nice features.
The odds of you ever utilizing a 2011 socket CPU to it's max are slim to none unless you really just want to get into high end overclocking for fun.
I personally believe the socket 1155 will be around longer because of the wider range of use it will have, it's not just targeted at the top of the top but every range between low and high end.
Was talkin to a PC guy all day, who i know has extensive knowledge of PC's. He got me to completly scrap my old stuff and go with a new set up, still reaching the same 4000$ cieling (counting peripherals and extras) but i think the performance will def be better
cpu: i5-2500k
CPU cooler: Corsair H100
GPU: 2x GTX 580 3GB
Mobo: ASUS Maximus IV Extreme-Z (LGA 1155)
RAM: CORSAIR Vengeance 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600
Case: Cooler Master Haf X (kkn3)
PSU: COOLER MASTER Silent Pro Hybrid RS-D00-SPHA-D3 1300W
HDD: Seagate Momentus XT 750GB SSHD
SSD: Intel 510 Series (Elm Crest) SSDSC2MH120A2K5 2.5" 120GB SATA III
Monitor: SAMSUNG S24A350H ToC Rose Black 24" Full HD HDMI LED BackLight LCD Monitor
Speakers: Logitech Z506 75 watts RMS 5.1 Surround Sound Speakers
Snd Card: ASUS XONAR_DG 5.1 Channels PCI Interface Xonar DG
Extras: Hauppauge HDPVR, Windows 7, all in 1 card reader, random cables, Eset virus scan, sony vegas movie studio HD platinum (came with Eset, 70$ discount). cpl tools all for 3619$, (3911$ after tax, tax is alot >.>)
Still out on mobo selection, not sure if i wanna change that or not. and since i hit my cieling ill just RAID 1+) in march with 4 of the seagate momentus, if it price drops by then. and maybe go to the i7, unless it handles what i need it to
Just gonna edit here and not revise what i said there so -> The mobo i am out on, thinking bout the extreme 7 forget brand and such but it had ivy bridge support and cud run 2 cards at x16 instead of x8 x8, and im still unsure about 2 gtx 580 vs 3 570's or 3 560 ti 448's, price isnt the matter i just want best performance, so its a 3way sli or 2 way sli..any1 got an idea?

According to that chart I posted - that Mobo (asus maximum iv extreme-z)is not going to be PCI-E 3.0 compliant. I could be wrong. I am choosing the P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3 because it's supposedly 3.0 and Ivy Bridge compatible. (Future proofed)
nvm what I said I just noticed your edit? lol
Just be careful if its a gigabyte. That link I posted outlines why not to trust them.

just from the start: an i5 won't compare to an i7
and don't pay for antimalware software there's so many great free solutions out there that are arguably way better than the purchased ones.
also that solid state hard drive is way more than the storage you'll need to run at those speeds, keep some regular hard drives for large things (like storing) and your programs/os on the ss, save hundreds.
also once again you're using about twice the ram you'll use for a few years, upgrade it later...

some good points but the bolded part...
The Seagate Momentus XT 750GB is a hybrid drive. It just has like 8GB of flash as cache like the Intel SRT but in one drive. His SSD is the Intel 120gb.

what he said. and the debate on the i5-2500k vs i7-2600k always seems to point to the i5 being better for gaming. havent read a single one stating i7 wins there. i7 just handles other type stuff a bit better

I actually read that the I7 actually gives worse performance on some games and that disabling hyperthreading can help to fix this. (Hyperthreading being one of the main reasons to own an I7)
Unless you are doing some 3d modeling or video encoding it seems to be a better option to get an I5 2500k and save the money to get something else. If money is no option or you just wanna say you have an I7 then there ya go lol.

My machine is comparable to your revamped version and let me say one thing..
I wish I'd gone ATI Cards. My NVIDIA 560s have a whole lot of tearing issues at seams in XI (like green lines between random terrain tiles. From everything I'd read, it seemed to relate to Shaders. ATI, apparently, has the ability to roll back the shader drivers for specific programs while NVIDIA does not. I did find one page where a guy described a pages-long registry hack for NVIDIA but it would be system-wide and not program-specific.
There were also a number of occasions where I fell through the terrain or driver-crashing, something I never experienced when I played on a lesser machine in XP years ago.
XI notably, and certain other games have not scaled well with the new technology. I like to play those old games and wish I'd tried the ATI option.
These problems occurred with any compatibility setting, in Windower and not, whether or not I was running one or both characters, and frankly my system should have been able to run 10 copies of XI easily lol. Let alone 2.

What are the chances of more games actually becoming hyper-threaded? I did my own research but most of the articles were about 6 years old. An I7 could be useful IF games are made to utilize the I7 setup. (Though from what I DID read its meant to be a pain in the *** and there are easier ways to get more juice in a game).
It could be another 10 years before we get that kinda thing more widespread - there are a handful of games that do use it but I uno personally if its worth the investment. - i5 2500k overclocked seems the more viable option unless you want to guarantee some kind of futureproofing - but as I said that might be a far away future and better processors will be available by then.
---
I think problems regarding graphics deterioration in FFXI is due to DX8 being emulated in later versions of DirectX10.0+ or something to that extent. I believe Aselin made a very informative post on the official forums - however I couldn't point you directly there.

A few people on numerous boards have said they have built machines specifically to run FFXI that by todays prices would cost about 300$.

3333333So i got all my parts today but im having so many issues..the mobo is not detecting any fans but their on, I have them all plugged into the molex(?) connectors straight from psu, then all the lil fan wires from pc plugged into a single lil plug that plugs into the mobo.
beyond that i cannot see my seagate momentus when pc is booted, only in my BIO's.
anyone know what i did wrong or am i missing a step?
and for those saying it aint hard..hate u all took me like 5 hrs and it still isnt right, cable management is horrible

how many pins are the connectors on the motherboard for the fan? 2 pins? if so then it probably won't realize they are their as it's just a 5v (typically, depending on fan) and ground.
as for the seagate, did you install the drivers for it?
Also building a computer isn't hard...can pretty much do it in my sleep.

That was probably a very gross overspending spree.... a new system even with monitors and badass keyboard/mice shouldn't cost anywhere near $5,000+....
I hope that PC lasts you until 2016+ otherwise you just screwed the pooch real bad....
Building a $2,000~ max system and upgrade the graphic card every year or two should be all you really need to do for a long time. My wife has my old system now with the Q6600 quad core, which was built years ago and it STILL handles everything ever thrown at it by only updating the graphic card... i spent 1400$ on that build.
My newest build has the first gen i7 and is about 1 year old now... i still see no reason to upgrade anything but the graphics and even then its not REALLY needed at this time...
Don't rice up a computer like that... it'll bite you in the *** in a few years when technology continues to evolve... trust me on this.

well i gave my parrt list up above, but maybe i can take a pic cuz.i dont know lol, i bought above my league lol.
i updated everything that would let me, mobo (from disk, ima call asus cuz site confuses me). i downloaded the newest gtx 580 drivers, my sli is running perfectly (over 7000 benchmark ffxiv at stock speeds yay!) and yeh i know thats prolly not the best benchmark to test.
as far as the drive goes i have it reading the seagate sshd as drive E: - the problem is now everything is saving to the sshd which i dont mind for now its downloading all stuff i need, but i want everything to save to the 750gb harddrive not the 250gb ssd..know a fix?
EDIT: i did not get the i5 i got the i7-2600k, and i got a samsung 830 ssd.
I thot the mobo came with a program to watch my temps outside of bio's, but im not finding anything, whats something i can download? stuff like MSI Afterburner only showin me GPU's or im stupid
by the way clinpachi, i dont know if ill be upgrading for sure, this pc has everything I need as i do not play many games, i bought way out of my league i know, i could have bought cheaper for my needs but said f it, i want a tiny e peen status.

New build is being an ***.
Everything powers up but there is no beep and the monitor does not power up. Stays on standby. Pulled out everything but the processor and I get the same results. Gonna take the gfx card out of my computer im using currently. I think this is a monitor issue (even though a 2nd monitor didnt work so im most likely wrong). If I'm right then this gfx card should work.
Case anyone wondering:
Z68 Fatal1ty Professional Gen 3.
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus CPU Fan.
2 Sticks of Corsair Vengeance in dual channel 4 gig per stick.
Radeon HD 5870 (gonna plug in my Nvidia 9600 GT).
Arctic power 700 MW.
Intel I5 2500k Processor.
Any help would be welcome. This thing is getting on my moobs.

Nobody blaming you here lol. If you don't game much then yeah... the PC will easily last you till 2016+ which will probably make it worth it in the end for you....
Software even now barely utilizes quad core properly.
Personally i like to spend no more than $2,000 and be good for around 4~ years until i need anything besides a graphic card. I still love that Q6600 quad core... and of course i love my i7.
It's sad to think that we are already heading towards seeing a petabyte as a common household name, and 8 core processors... i mean really? We barely use what we have right now ~_~....

If you aren't getting a beep or LED code... nor are you getting a response and it acts just the same with no CPU in the socket...
Sorry buddy...
time to RMA the board back to where you got it.... it should ALWAYS beep or give some sort of indication as to what the problem is.
Example: My current build has a LED 2 digit screen on the board to indicate things such as bad ram... processor problems ect... And my last PC build had a set of tones as well as a red/yellow/green light to indicate the same problems.
What board did you buy though?

it wouldn't even boot without a processor in the socket.
Z68 Fatal1ty Professional Gen 3.
brb gonna try this gfx card (i had issues with HDMI connection with this monitor with my last gfx card I tried so its the last thing I;m going to try before I RMA.)

you can edit any drive letter easily enough, short of your OS drive, even that one you can change but windows likes to throw a fit at times.
control panel> administrative tools> computer management> disk management, aside from that I don't see why you don't just chose what you install/save to where since it's always an option...regardless of the letter

change the setting in chrome, I use firefox so idk where that setting is for you.
like what? when you install things used the "advanced" option, which drive is your OS on?
So i had this posted elsewhere to run FFXIV but in my building at Cyberpowerpc.com i decided i want to go beyond FFXIV. Not because i play anything else but because i have the money to for once in my life due to an injury settlement. So for next 2 years im house stricken and I want a beast of a machine. My price range will go anywhere up to 2000$-3000$ (preferably 200-2500$)in the spoiler below ill put what i think (with my lack of knowledge) and I'm hoping for some changes or perhaps a better build for the buck. Building a PC part-by-part isn't for me even tho it costs less, I have no knowledge of building a PC these days especially when i figure the card i chose in my build requires liquid cooling. So any advice/help from someone who knows their PC's would be immensly helpful.
This is the AMD machine:
Price 2915$ - also considering dropping th card to a ATI Radeon 6970 to save a few hundred bucks. Case: * Azza Hurrican 2000 Full Tower Gaming Case with 4 Hot Swappable HDD Cage & (4) 230MM Fans
Internal USB Extension Module: None
Extra Case Fan Upgrade: Maximum Enermax 120MM Case Cooling Fans for selected case (Maximum Silent Operation) (500-1,200 RPM T.B. Silence Black Color with Red LED Twister Bearing 8-14 dBA)
Noise Reduction Technology: Sound Absorbing Foam on Side, Top And Bottom panels
Power Supply Gasket
Anti-Vibration Fan Mounts
CPU: AMD FX-8150 3.60 GHz Eight-Core AM3+ CPU 8MB L2 Cache & Turbo Core Technology

Any thoughts/comments about either machine is nice, I have not a clue about cards and CPU's nemore. Only what i've read being that AMD 6990 is most powerful card on the market at the moment, and the CPU race goes either way between the 2 chosen (AMD FX 8core/Intel i7 2700). I also thot about using dual medium end cards but not sure how that would stack vs 1 high end card. Sorry for long post cuz i r moron. But perhaps it could be fun for someone to help me out ^^.
