Voice actors add a nice degree of depth to the game, but unfortunately kind of solidify the effect of storytelling; especially in a fantasy based scenario. The old bricks of text in previous RPGs gave a similar effect to reading a novel that allowed you to mold the scenario and dialog in your head, thus giving free reign for your imagination. This.... Not so much. The amount of work put into XIV is admirable.
As someone's who's played from Beta and seen livestreams of the alpha, this game has changed completely. The next update abolishes physical levels which as a huge part of the system. They're still even talking about adding jumping into the game, they're adding jobs too. Shiva.Flionheart said: » The amount of work put into XIV is admirable. Admittedly I am not a lawyer but...
Square owns the Square trademark: https://squareup.com/legal/trademarks And this link: http://tarr.uspto.gov/servlet/tarr?regser=serial&entry=85391771 Which I assume is the source of the excitement appears to merely name Square-Enix as the people that previously owned the trademark. .:edit:. Hmmmm. This says differently: http://www.trademarkia.com/square-85391771.html Is SE about to sue Square for the trademark? Asura.Ashleh

This isn't going to grant them some magical power to make good RPGs again.

Anyone else see this as almost an insult to Enix?

It's a great game where, for once, the voices actually add to your gaming experience as a whole. Asura.Ashleh

I "hope" that it signals Square trying to turn around and make good PR under an old name. Dealing with company acquisitions and name changes all day, I rarely see a company change names without some sort of "vision plan" or "directions change" in the workds. SOMETIMES they also do this when they have to change names due to legality. Perhaps, Square took on the enix name for 10 years not unlike "the artist formerly known as prince" to avoid getting the ***sued out of him. That being said: I'm going to try to be optomistic here being that the largest portion of games I ever enjoyed were for SNES, and said "squaresoft" when i started up. and Paper Mario games are completely awesome too. worth a play if you haven't. I remember wasting countless hours on the original and on Thousand Year Door. XD
Particularly excited that they're working on Paper Mario for the 3DS. Series is in need of a new one on consoles though. Don't really consider Super Paper Mario an entry in the franchise. :\ |
