Very possible. The initial estimate of a week was hasty and came before anyone could truly understand the extent of the damage. The northern portion of Japan moved 13 FEET!! closer to the United States. They are concentrating on just keeping the nuclear reactors from blowing up, I think having them back online and producing power are months away.

Kinda wish SE had said the servers would be down for the forseeable future, because the matter is out of their hands, and it will save a ***load of QQing in a week or so because people can't get on.

Being that FFXI is a multi-million dollar enterprise on a month-to-month basis, they might continue with their original estimate in order to not wound their economy anymore than it will already suffer.

I'm not getting my hopes up though.

Anything longer than a week will be devastating to the player base of both games, if this doesn't impact them enough as is. Not saying they should start up earlier despite the energy concerns, but it may destroy their remaining player base. Imo at least..

As I said, it's out of their hands, they don't really have a choice in the matter. As a lot of people say, RL > IG. That works from SE's side too.

And if the playerbase fades, I don't know. Most people are understanding of what is going on, we might lose some idiots, but when the servers are back up, I know I will be.

they could easily throw on their own generator (big one mind you) to power the servers, so they technically do have a choice in the matter.

As for the power conditions from the grid in Japan, nope.

Again, doubt it, all things considered. Most of the staff involved in keeping the servers up, and the dev team, being in Japan, it would be stupid to move the servers.

Taking into consideration that they are zeroing out the charges for the whole month of April they may at least be setting up for a slightly longer delay, or they could just be getting a little generous giving a free month for a week lost.

The world is not so black and white, unfortunately. As much danger and death that there has been, Japan's economy is still extremely important – and they know this. Fundamentals will be restored first, yes, but they will not put business on hold any longer than is absolutely imperative. They are going to suffer enough financially as it is. For SE, this is not about "RL vs. IG", this is all real life, and it's the livelihood of all Square-Enix's employees, their business as a whole, and indirectly affects a large portion of their population and cash flow.

SE is dealing with a few things.

One, the government and utility companies are asking high-energy-demand facilities like server farms to shut down to conserve energy.

Two, there will likely be rolling blackouts across the Kanto region for the next month or so while the energy grid is shuffled to compensate for the power loss.

SE is complying with the requests from local authorities and sparing users from sudden, ongoing outages, which could potentially result in major data loss due to the "unplanned" shutdown.

They do not have to reimburse you for this. The Terms of Service says they can be down for as long as they want and not give you a peny in refund, but they're granting a month of free service for what may be significantly less than that in downtime. I think they've done about the best job they can.

For folks asking about "secondary facilities" and the like, no. MMO companies do not keep "hot swap" backup facilities ready to go at a moment's notice should the primary go down. It's a game, not life and death. To do so would require your monthly subscriptions to be $30-40 per month for the past 9 years they haven't had an accident, and nobody would have accepted that.

If they did move the servers SE would lose control of the game and Microsoft would have the power, but before they didn't want anything to do with FF now that they have a chance of a billion something dollars quarterly they want everything with it.....and I'm afraid of seeing what they would do to the franchise

Imo we shouldnt be worrying about a game and not being able to play it....think of the thousands of lives that were lost and wounded during this traumatic/unexpected catastrophe.

while I agree with what you say here, regardless of the terms, when somebody is down for an extended period of time the terms of service can be held questionable, if a group were to pursue a claim.

Personally (imo) the laws are too lax on ToS agreements like SE's in allowing them to be (for lack of another term atm) Naxi's.

Then again SE actually did the good PR and customer service route for once, so kudos to them.

Exactly, microsoft has enough problems as it is and they still have problems with their own servers as it is

it's not even about that, it's just why would they?

there's no logical reason for them to do so, they're more than capable of handling it themselves...

It's not the fact that idiots will leave, it's the fact that in the month+ that the servers are down, people will undoubtedly find new games to play and other things to do with their lives. So, when the servers do come back online, they may not be enthusiastic to come back because they've found better things to do with their lives.

It sounds terrible, but online-game providers rely on those who become addicted to their games. If these players are forced to quit for a while, then they may "see the light" and be unwilling to go back into the cycle of having the game eat their life again.
