i would do a song, and when i ran in the army with no headphones allowed, i'd pace it to my steps
but i have no idea if that's actually the correct thing to do, they never actually taught us any technique
congrats on quitting in any case, that's awesome :o

Yeah, the music you're listening to is usually a good rhythm to follow for pace and breathing. Even if it's like a fast song or something, you can usually identify an underlying bass or drum beat or something to comfortably follow. Otherwise, you just have to practice keeping your breathing steady even when you're getting tired. If you start breathing erratically you might burn yourself out faster and it will get harder to breathe.

i think it depends >.>
every second of running past the first minute is misery for me >.>
and then i dread knowing i've gotta do it, so it ends up causing stress ^ I don't find it stress relieving at all =/ I think alot of it is its very brutal on my knees and I have yet to condition my breathing so I don't feel like I am going to pass out and die D: I am switching to biking as it is supposedly better on the knees etc =/
how did you learn to breathe properly through the running (do u recite a song in ur head, count, or am i just stupid :P) I just find a steady rhythm and it sets in as I'm going, I've been running since I was 11 so I think it's just kind of second nature now.

I smoked for 12 years and quit. 2 months later, I was told I had "Obstructive Lung Disease", which is basically bad asthma or COPD.

My last physical (last yr) my doc said my lungs sounded perfect ~ like a non smoker and I should quit b4 that changed (a motivating factor to quit) ... I suspect it is just because the lungs need time to heal from the damage of smoking and not breathing proper but I will insist on a stress test for my lungs to make sure nothing has changed =/
Would suck to quit smoking to hear I am more unhealthy -.-;

Congrats on quitting, that's quite an accomplishment in itself.
Yeah, starting off slow is the best thing to do. I was always the fat kid in middle/high school that DREADED the '1 mile run' days. I swear I couldn't even jog for half a mile without almost passing out lol.

...and the intermediate phase
...and the advanced phase ;_; It really depends on your goal/what you expect to get out of it. But for me the most difficult part was beginning. transitions from running a regular 5 miles everyday and moving up to 10 can be difficult but you've certainly put your self in a better position to deal with that change if you're already running.

Yeah, those transitions can be hard. The actual smart and safe thing to do is to increase slowly by a mile or so at a time if you're trying to go for long distance eventually. I went up in 5 mile increments from 6-20 in 3 weeks only because I had no choice since the marathon was so close, but it wasn't really a smart thing to do.

I would love to do the Boston, but I think it would take some serious training. Definitely going to be a possible goal though, maybe a few years down the line if I keep running diligently.

Is there a NYC marathon that maybe is do-able *thinking east coast here* or you primarily staying West coast?
This is a thread that I found on another website I post at. It can be really really interesting. I thought it deserved a place here.
Post your random thoughts for the day here, or anything else that intrigues you.
For starters, is it possible to give constructive critism to someone who doesn't have a neck? I totally just walked by a girl who didn't. Someone isn't getting a necklace for Valentines day!
And who decided black and white can't be colors? I want to say a racist. I really do.
