We can only hope they're sweet enough to save XIV from failing. That, and we can hope that SE (and other games developers) learn from these past few months that half-arsing their products and expecting people to lap it up without complaint is arrogant and stupid.
As Pawnskipper said earlier, the "sell it now, fix it later" mentality that is becoming more common with the big names in the industry needs to stop. Developers deserve to be able to create something they can feel proud of, and players deserve a certain degree of quality for their money. Rushing a game onto store shelves as quickly as possible doesn't do much for either side.

Just to quote this... you might realize that people will take shitty graphics if there is content. FFXIV might be beautiful, but theres very little content - so you might as well make it your background desktop wallpaper, because thats about as much content as there is right now.

What SE needs isn't a reassuring pat on the shoulder from fans saying "There, there. I'm sure you'll get it right eventually". What they need is a kick up the arse and someone to tell them to pull their finger out and make an effort with this game.
Fortunately the less than favourable reception that XIV has gotten seems to have done the trick.

According to the update details. All of the add-ons are the one's we require.

New events (ie Dynamis, Salvage) which are released through updates are obviously expected to have some small tweaks. Salvage and Einherjar, for example, were far too difficult when they were first released, and they were adjusted. Salvage had the chest at the beginning added so you didn't enter with literally nothing, and in Einherjar pulling one mob in the zone caused every single other mob of that type to automatically link.
FFXI did have some issues on Japanese release...but they were solved (for the most part) by the time the game hit US shores. And FFXI had a decent opening.
The problem is that it IS the same company. And they're making the same mistakes...except this time with a barren wasteland of a game with no content that is interesting OR worth doing. The progression is awful, the economy is awful, the crafting is awful, there isn't a single redeeming factor to this half-finished game, which punishes you for doing simple things like attempting to navigate through menus, or find an item to buy or sell, or even trying to type messages to other players.
FFXIV had an awful opening. They had no actual advertising, and the open beta was too close to the release for word of mouth to spread far enough. The manager of my local Gamestop wasn't even aware the game was coming out (he thought the release was several months away). The game is tanking, and will probably continue to do so.

You guys are still comparing XI's release to XIV's release? Ok go ahead. Ignore the logic, just compare their releases.

Players want a better game at launch and if the game loses enough subs, it doesn't have the money to improve (much less cover the initial investment).
It has been said enough times. No need for long-winded discussion.

I like this one. People like this totally forget that FFXI is forever tied to the PS2.
FFXI will NEVER have a graphics update. Forget about it. Bury this idea because it's not going to happen.
Wow is not a console game. Most of the problems with FFXI are due to the limitations of the PS2 hardware. They would get sued if they abandoned the PS2.
Also.. As others have said. FFXI isn't that great anymore.. it was fun for a while and I'd say it was a really good game even way past it's day.. but now everything in FFXI is endgame. 75% of the game is dead. I am not a fan of the level cap increasing or the mini-expansions.

In order for a business to change they have to realize they did something wrong. SE views FFXI as a success so it's not a surprise they believed following the same model of release was ok for FFXIV.
When people do compare XIV to XI they are not comparing DOOM to COD. MMO's change. They are comparing the track record of continuous development and improvement that SE puts into it's previous MMO (and is continuing to put into that 8 year old game, Yes FFXI is STILL developing.) That development track record from SE is really good and holds a very promising future for FFXIV.
I really think anymore.. that it's been a month. Nothing holds peoples interest for a month anymore. The only people who care about FFXIV anymore are the players who play it and like it and the FFXI players who hate it and wish it would go away.. I wish the later group would get a clue and realize this game could be just as cool if not more so than FFXI.

It truly amazes me how useless people have become. The game has only been out few months. I dont have the link right but please go look at the page that shows all the FFXI updates since JP release. When they came out with the alpha SE said your gonna want to use a gamepad, yet everyone is crying because its not keyboard mouse friendly. Problem with everyone is they want it all, and they want it yesterday. Half of you are playing with daddy's money. It's 15 dollars and they making it sound like its much. If you dont like it dont play, but dont spend that free time hating on the game cause it doesnt give you a hard on like FF1 did. Let them do their thing.

I played Diablo II for like 1-2yrs, and it was amazing.... it looks like god dam SUJPER NINTENDO GRAPHICS not even Nintendo 64.... but it was so much more fun >_>;
(And it's like Birds eye view gameplay....)
My point is that...sometimes it's not about how pretty it looks on the outside... if it's rotting from the inside... it's like a Gorgeous girl with Herpes+Gan-aria+HIV... just not worth it....
This is how I've experienced...RPG gaming in the last 7-9 yrs...
Idk what I played before Diablo except for maybe PS2 online lol....
Diablo II - Ugly Game, Fun, Entertaining, Free.
Pay 2 Play-
FFXI - Soso looking game, Fun* Sometimes annoyingly hard... but when you do almost anything successfully it feels like an accomplishment... but it was still stupid hard when I started playing XD
WoW - A little prettier... Easy... BORING....Oh look I can ride a tiger! (Ok now I'm bored again...)
FFXIV - VERY Pretty! Umm... why is this mod healing....wait what... it didnt even cast cure...***... DC?! Lets party! I can't... invite... ugh....what?!.... Where are you on my map? What we don't have party map blips?! >< ~_~
Notice.... glitches and UI interface issues is my only "BEEF" with FFXIV, once that's taken care of... I think it'll be fine. Sure as hell better than 11 IMO. I'll probably just play Diablo 3 when it comes out though, but thats just me.

P.S.: Square Enix is like a spoiled little Brat, if you don't take away his Candy, he'll keep doing the same thing and won't listen.
Candy = Money
Same thing = Nothing....
SE is a Business, best way to send them the message that they F@$%ed up is by taking away your money =)
If you keep giving them money, they won't fix jack sh!t, that's just the truth. They will, and they will take their sweet *** time.
Last thing -
You can say the game is free all you want, fact of the matter is the mass majority of people had to mod up a lot of crap on their computers to play this game #1. (Personally I costume built a computer for about $800~ to play this)
#2, Everyone had to buy the stupid thing.... weather it was standard or Special Edition... we still pair our $50-80 to get the game..... So as far as I'm concerned the game was very far from free to me.

FFXIV will get better as it ages, and the dev teams puts more quests, items, classes, etc etc into it.
This is why I will play FFXIV at least 2 years later (if still exists). so, according to Naeo's logic, FFXI is like fine wine, aged to taste. While FFXIV is that cheap ***you find in liqour stores in black neighborhoods.
Um... sure?
i'm saying XIV will get good as the dev teams fix and patch the game. Any MMO tends to get better as it ages, but that's only because bugs and issues are addressed, more content is added, and hopefully new zones are opened up.
FFXI is far from a fine wine, it's just gotten slightly better tasting.

Well, forgive us PC -look at those two letters again- players that don't have / don't want to buy a game pad, and would rather just use a keyboard and mouse because, oh idk...it's the main way to play games on a PC?
and most of the people I've met, play on their own dime. maybe back in XI everyone was playing on parent's money. but regardless of WHO is paying for it, why should we as consumers not expect a certain degree of quality, Someone we know, or our own person is paying for this game, it better meet the bare minimal standards.
SE should have 'done their thing' instead of rushing out this abomination of a product. They already gave TWO free months, they're not going to make a whole lot of money anytime soon. I don't even see XIV surpassing XI. and that game had a shitton of people back in the day.
do note: this isn't a XI>XIV post, XI's too old to be considered a mainstream MMO anymore, it's dying. However, it was a good game at it's prime. XIV's too rushed to even qualify as a contender for top MMO, and with it's poor release, bad reviews, and overall anger from players, it wont ever reach top tier MMO.

All they have to do is give us 2 option, forcing PS2 players to use the classic option and PC players can upgrade to the to 2.0 grafics.
By xaero 2010-11-21 13:26:44
I'm pretty sure CCP abandoned this though. I don't recall their being an option to change graphical settings anymore. Cost would be prohibitive to do such as well. Having to design 2x of everything, and make everyone download both versions. CCP already has so many problems with patches it's not even funny. The problems they have had make anything peeps deal with in WoW or XI look small indeed.
CCP says buh bye to classic graphics
confirmed. I was pretty sure when I last played this. The option was no longer really there

I haven't played FF14 yet because it was rushed and has a half-assed feel to it. Too many game companies have adopted the attitude "sell it now, fix it later.... we only care about the money" and it's led to a decline in the overall quality of new releases on the market. People would rather rush 10-15 "ok" titles out the door and capitalize in bulk sales than they would create 3-4 EXCELLENT titles and bank their sales on them. I'm seeing the same "quantity before quality" attitude with FF14 and I want to see results before I invest in the game.
FF14 is a gorgeous game and I bought a new pc specifically for it, but until S-E makes it a better experience I'm holding off on my purchase. FF14 has potential, but that's all it is right now. It has to stay alive long enough for that potential to be realized, and at the rate it's going I don't know if it will weather out its rocky start or not. The last thing I want to do is play a new MMO for 5-6 months only to have the servers shut down just as I'm getting my character off the ground because it lacked the proper support. We'll see what happens at the Ps3 release, but right now the ball is in S-E's court. They may be able to salvage FF14 but they still have to act fast, and time is not on their side.

you fail to realize if 14 fails completely their company is going to lose a lot more stock then the 20% that it already has, hence SE will do whatever it takes to fix the game. people like you just look at the release condition and say that they wont try to fix it when in reality SE has a lot to lose

"Square Enix have announced the remaining players of Final Fantasy XIV will be given a third free month, possibly a result of player numbers having reached their lowest ever despite the game still being free.
Their announcement blithely fails to mention why they are suddenly feeling so generous (although their CEO is more honest, to investors at least):
As always, we would like to express our gratitude to all players enjoying their adventures in Eorzea.
Today, we have decided to extend the free trial period an additional 30 days. Please refer to the following for more details.
We have also added a Topics post detailing a portion of the content heading your way in the two large-scale version updates slated for late November and mid-December.
Quote: This month’s version update, tentatively scheduled for November 25, marks the first step in bringing about significant improvement to FINAL FANTASY XIV, guided in large part by the feedback you, the players, have provided. We are adamant that you should be given the opportunity to experience these changes firsthand before deciding to fully commit to the game.
The two month extended trial was about to end, which had triggered speculation that player populations would collapse catastrophically, rather than gradually as they appear to be at present.
Average daily player populations continue to plummet, standing at 24,277 at the latest count:
Square Enix did announce a very extensive patch and generally appear to be desperately trying to rescue the game, but it would appear to be a case of too little, too late – PS3 players may find their version comparatively polished when it is released in 2011, though it appears they will be joining empty servers."
Trial information:
Boom bam.
