I was actually saving up money to upgrade my computer too...

I spent a total of 700 bucks(counting the game) for a PC that runs FFXIV as smooth as silk! Before this game I have never built my own PC and found it very easy to do. The interwebz is a wonderful thing. Tigerdirect and Newegg are great for getting what you need for cheap and there is a ton of information out there on what to buy to get the best for least cost. After building my own PC I will never buy from dell or any of those places ever again. Basically, if you pay more than 1,000 for a PC you either 1. Have the money to burn for an uber PC or 2. Spent way too much on pre-built.

Everyone accuses me of being a hater, but let's look at the situation:

I've given these guys $15/month, across international lines, unbroken, for nearly 8 years. I helped make two third party utilities and an entire site to try and make the game better by working around their crappy technology. I published dat mods and new texture art. I admin'd a very busy XI forum for 4 years. I fanatically defended XI from every other MMO out there.

I pimped XIV to everyone I knew, even at work. We even set up another site and another business to spin off a XIV version of our XI site. I dropped $4,300 on a ridiculously over-powered computer to play this game, and convinced friends to do the same, who probably couldn't afford it. We all rushed out to buy the CE on release day.

And what do we get?

"Well, it's only slightly worse than crap from ten years ago."

Seriously, it makes me want to hit things, and I'm not an angry person by nature.
Can I have 1100 dollars so I can build my PC? xD

Honestly though, the bashing on this game is getting old, but at the same time I really can't blame people. I wasn't expecting something that great, however giving the week gap between open beta ending and CE being released as well as the issues the game still had I wasn't really surprised how much of a bomb the game is ATM.

No AMD chip runs it smooth as silk. (and I really like AMD)

I've got a Pheonom Deneb core overclocked to 3.4ghz and DDR3 1600 ram and it's sluggish at best.

Yea, the motherboard and vid card seem to be the key factors. I have a friend with the same vid card, but different motherboard and it doesnt work as well as mine. Would like to see if there is any difference in processors like you are saying, but dont have any more money to toss at my pc. It works very well so I am happy. The only lag I get is server side with settings at about 80-90%.

Jaerik I don't think everyone is accusing you of being a hater.

I myself bought XIV because I expected it to have what I liked from XI and have much more in the way of capable content and current generation technologies. As many on launch, I quickly realized that I was let down. Launch content was buggy, riddled with lag and lacking in most all of my expectations. I was one of the people that thought there would be a "rescue patch" at launch, that added the retail features to the game that separated it from the beta/alpha.

What we got was the beta repackaged as a 60-75$ USD game.

If these patches in the next 3 months do what they say they will I might stick around. Otherwise, sadly, I'll probably move on.

So a slight bump here...

I own FFXIV as well as FFXI. with running out of much to do in FFXI unless SE comes out with something new that is actually worth while I am considering giving FFXIV another go since it has been out for long enough I hope to be a much better game.

I am looking for some FFXI player feedback on how they feel FFXIV is now since all the updates before I go into the long upload and download.

I literally just got started on the game again the other day, so far I like it, although I haven't had a chance to experience many of the changes, but I think they are probably heading in the right direction. SE really doesn't seem to want to give up on 14, and they probably do have a chance at turning it around. I pretty much left 11 for reasons of not having much time to play, and all the new material just seems so re-hashed from old stuff and the "new" wears off quickly. So I went with 14, it's free and it will be interesting to see where it goes... if no where interesting then I will most likely move on to something else entirely or be done with MMO's.

I'm interested to see how the game is gonna look on my new graphics card arriving Tuesday tho... and the download to start playing is actually pretty quick. Much quicker than 11 downloads.

You might wanna wait for someone with more experience in the new part of the game than myself, but so far I'm enjoying it more than the first time around on launch day... although that could also be since I've finally grown tired of 11, not just taking a break, but feel that I'm just done with it.

"necro bump" just means that there are a certain number of days between the last update of the thread and today's post. Essentially the thread was "dead" and you revived it by posting in it.

Copy pasted from another thread, I wrote this a minute ago. It is more directed to the XI fans who played for the experience and not necessarily its WoW-like MMO fun. The kind that like their nostalgia glasses thick.

Quote:
I am a huge critic of the game but I suppose I can admit that it isn't really but only if you look at it from the perspective before MMOs were popular. A lot of it feels like the typical Korean WoW clone MMO, with added slowness to make it feel like XI.

If you were a fan of XI's story and atmosphere, or are prone to nostalgia glasses when you think about the world XI created in its infancy (and in a lot of cases, your infancy - I was 12 when I started XI and the world seemed massive, not one where you can point and click to travel wherever or look up anything), I don't think that feeling can be recreated but that's how I feel about any MMO. To me they are much more closer to a Diablo II online experience (infinite Baal runs) than what they used to be: immersive worlds, time-sinks included.

I think why a typical XI fan might've disliked XIV is because we were hoping SE, as a trusted developer, could recreate the feeling of that immersive world unlike what most MMOs have become (the Diablo II experience described above). This, combined with what would make non-XI fans / typical 'MMO' fans dislike it, which was its terrible amount of bugginess, lag, and lack of streamlined gameplay didn't even give it worth as one of the better WoW-clone / Diablo II experience MMOs.

I am playing the game now, I just decided to take a look at it again a week ago since my old XI friend did too. We both picked up the CE and both quit before the free months was up (before they announced indefinite free play). I think what it does the most for me is making me sad and nostalgic for when FFXI was truly a world of experience. I don't see that recreated at all in the game, and its interpretation of fantasy amounts to dialogue that I feel I'd rather ignore despite its efforts - and let me tell you I am almost strictly a storyline gamer. In any game that hasn't had an intriguing story, it takes me quite an effort to even look at the gameplay.

And speaking of gameplay... at best it is something to enjoy because it is free and you might have friends to jump on with.

Disclaimer: I don't know anything about dungeons or endgame but I imagine I'd have quite a bit of fun since lack of any real content was the biggest downside of the game even when it was a buggy laggy mess. I didn't feel motivated to pursue any of the things I was, and that was up to around level 25 on one DoW and one DoH class. Now I suppose it'll be fun, so I'll keep turning the game on whenever I have a free moment. But those free moments go towards reading random things on the Internet and making gigantic posts in threads like these before they go to that game, that's how much it doesn't have priority.

Same boat as you. Been playing XI and pretty much "beat the game" except for some minor things. However, I had got the XIV CE on release day and didn't stick with the game.

That being said: FFXIV is A LOT better now than it was at release. I'm really enjoying it honestly. It's been around 10 months since I've last actually played XIV, and I'm shocked at how much I've enjoyed the last 3-4 days I've played. My XI LS has been giving me a hard time because I only log on for events now, but the game is really fun. One thing that actually surprised me was the population of this game really isn't as low as you would think. Before I really only enjoyed fishing and crafting, but now I enjoy every aspect of the game. It is definitely worth checking out.

Don't do what I did. Trying out other newly released MMOs really ruins your expectations of what FFXIV should be. Or maybe that's a good thing. I feel like they'll never meet my expectations. Now that the absolutely huge annoyances are dealt with (or are being worked on), I still play XIV on occasion but there's still too much about it I don't like. Maybe it just comes down to... I don't find the battle system particularly fun. I feel like they need to speed it up a bit. Even if it means just making the enemies hit you faster while reducing your delay on skills and auto-attack. It is very visually appealing but doesn't feel exhilirating to play. Does anyone else understand what I mean by this? Maybe I need to get higher in rank to truly judge this.

So in the mean time I'm just sticking to FFXI.

could have bumped another thread >.>

anyways

It is still a unfinished product...

Level'ing is a pain

There is some content....but not really

exploration sucks (there is nothing to visit except the major cities really)

The story is ok....but its still a work in progress

The DoW classes are interesting (ranger is the super class atm especially with the endgame)

The DoM classes on the other hand Conjurer is your healer/nuker (SCH?) and Thaum sucks *** after the gimp (cant AoE cures...and he cant nuke/debuff maybe....)

So yeah

So in the mean time I'm just sticking to FFXI.

I do know in a way what you mean, but I actually get the same experience between abyssea zones and non aby-zones in 11. My dnc inside aby seems to just come to life and is quick paced with lots of hits, tons of abilities to keep track of and use cause you always have TP from the hit fest... outside aby though... meh... I compare 14's pacing with outside abyssea pacing in 11. Even for mages the amount of stuff you can do inside aby is super fast compared to elsewhere in the game.

I guess after reading a few other posts I've been able to sum up a bit better why I've switched from 11 to 14... besides the "beaten the game" feeling, I get the impression that all that is left to see in 11 beyond the level 90 cap is the same thing we have seen, just slightly re-packaged, and I'll grow bored of that content quickly... just tired of grinding day in and day out in abyssea for KI's and glavoid shells... although I'd probably like to go back and beat the WotG and ToAU stories, but then I'd probably feel even more so like I'm done. Also not here to argue if 11 is a "good" or "bad" game now, I've just personally grown tired of it. I also have very little playtime now, I find it hard with 11 to not want to log in and play all day/night.

Explaining that just shows a little better as to why I've gone to 14, and where my opinion about the game is coming from. I didn't leave 11 looking for an 11 clone... I went to look for something fresh and new, arguably there are better MMO's for that than 14, but for some reason I find myself rooting for the game. SE seems to be doing now what they should have been from the start, and it's going to be an interesting road and I want to be there for it. The game is far from perfect, but the change that is coming has the opportunity to not be a re-skined area, or blowing open the game with bumping up our stats insane amounts... it could actually one day be a new area, new monsters, story, etc. I would much rather take the playtime I have, and devote it to a game that has the possibility to become something very interesting, rather than sink anymore time into 11.

I'm also absolutely enjoying myself while playing 14, where I wasn't in 11, which I think at the end of the day is all that matters, having fun or not... it's still just a game at the end of the day.

Maybe that will help some players who are thinking about going back to 14... playing that game or not is a completely individual experience, from my view there is 11 and 14, I don't care about all the other MMO's and I never would have played anything in the MMO category in the first place had it not been for 11 and later 14.

tl;dr... it's free, if you have the disc it takes a few min to install, the updates are really fast, try it out, make up your own mind.
