You can use it before the entering the Ambuscade or inside.
@Stuntmandan you do not lose the effect if you die or lose the run. You only lose it if you let the effect wear off. The effect lasts 72 hours.

O know this is a late response. I just wanted there to be clear, correct, and current information to be on the comments so new players get best best info available.

Seems to triple your rewards from a successful ambuscade.

I did a Volume 2 run on Difficult with 4 people in party. I received 600 hallmarks and 180 gallantry.

You have to use this BEFORE you enter the Ambuscade. If you use it while you're inside for some reason it does nothing. Not sure if it's a bug or it only happened when it first came out, but use outside to be safe!
