Rest of the world, learn to use our system.. Everyone knows USA is 'the country'.. Not our fault yal want to do things weird.
It is sad, yea?
We have learned to use it. Do we put forth the effort to change our system, no.

The US got to the moon first and claimed it. Therefore the entire moon AND the largest economy on earth use the imperial system. What's wrong with the rest of you slackers?

I think a fair number of us know how to use it, just no one wants to switch all our street signs and ***over because it'd be such a hassle. Plus we beat you silly in WWII, so suck it. (Realistically, the imperial system has several advantages in real world applications - for example the inch/foot works better than the cm/m) This thread does remind me of those famous metric-to-imperial conversion errors. The one that immediately comes to mind is the NASA Mars Climate Orbiter in 1998...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mars_Climate_Orbiter ...which was lost because the flight system software used (metric) newtons, but for months the ground crew was using (imperial) pound-force for the adjustments, causing it to veer far off course. :/ There was that famous case of the Air Canada "Gimli Glider" in 1983, when Canada first adopted the SI Metric system... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gimli_Glider ...where the passenger airline refilled, using an erroneous conversion factor, to only half or so the needed fuel (in litres.) :/ And there was that incident at Space Mountain in Tokyo Disneyland in 2003... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Incidents_at_Tokyo_Disney_Resort#Space_Mountain ...where the roller coaster derailed due to the replacement axles were ordered too small, having used the English units specified in 1995 when it went operational, instead of the metric units used in 2003. ;_; For sure it would be nice if one side or another got on the same page. ^_- (Although, arguably, the Air Canada flight incident could have been avoided had Canada decided not to adopt the metric system...) :p US customary system of measures is not the same thing as the (British) imperial system of measures!

That would totally throw my projects for a loop if we were to switch suddenly too. If anything, it will have to be a slow progression over a long period of time if the US were to adopt the metric system in its entirety. Science and medicine use the metric system globally, and isn't that all that matters? When I drive in Europe I still can recognize the speed limit signs and the speed at which I'm driving, so...big deal? Not really. EDIT: I think that the US has more problems on their hands. Converting to the metric system nationally is the least of our worries. zahrah said: Phoenix.Sehachan said: Seriously, learn to use it. He ran for 34 meters to score! and like...its 4th and milimeters... and for driving like 360 miles sounds a lot better than driving 579 kilometers |
