Ramuh.Rowland said: » Ramuh.Rowland said: » If you were to explain the gameplay/mechanics/story/etc to someone relatively interested in starting FFXI, for the first time, what would you tell them? Pros and Cons of starting a new character? Pros: 1. Leveling with Grounds of Valor is stupid fast. They can literally learn the basic battle mechanics by solo playing Rdm or Whm to about level 15 or so, then go to Gusgen Mines, dither around while waiting for an alliance, and then they can be level 50 by the end of the day... depending on how long they get to stay/how good the alliance is, etc. 2. Grounds of Valor allows you to power level someone with a non-mage job. If you friend leads a busy life, and they just want to advance up so they can do some of the story sequence, but you still have lots of time to do stuff, they can leave their character AFK and get free levels. 3. GoV/FoV tabs make getting around and back to your home nation a cinch. 4. Gear is pretty cheap these days, but crystal prices are pretty constant, so low level farming isn't too bad. 5. If you come to Bismarck you can be sexy with Josi. Cons: 1. There aren't as many people dithering around the home nations as there used to be, and you really miss out on meeting tons of people early on. 2. Gusgen Mines leveling leaves you skill deficient, so you have to go skill up, which is another best-done solo type thing. 3. Your inventory is ultra limited, and the fame quests aren't cheap. There's more cons, but at work, and actually have to work. Probably gonna stick to hume :)
They should add Bangaas, I would totally be one and perv on my friend with emotes lol
Was a big fan of hybrid races myself, would've been pretty cool~
I lied. Rowland here's the other cons.
4. Compared to you, they'll probably be about as useful as the straw house was to the first little pig. Even after you get them up to around max level, if you help them with story sequences, then you're likely to take most of the fun out of it. 5. Even if they are useful, because maybe you've gone soft in your venerable age, they still get so HELP I AM TRAPPED IN 2006 PLEASE SEND A TIME MACHINE strong leveling to 90+ that this might detract from the fun. All I can think of right now. Quaggan Backpack lol
The new way of leveling makes it very easy to catch up to everyone to endgame, however, this is a great thing for all people coming back to the game, for people completely new I still think FFXI is really not as enjoyable. Depends on what kind of gamer he is. If he enjoys putting all the attention on the endgame, gear farming etc, then sure go ahead, however, all of the rest has kinda disappeared.
I would highly suggest doing at least the missions each at the corresponding level, if anything to experience that part of the fun we had back then, because going at 99 and oneshotting X boss is really not as inspiring. And also I would encourage exploration, I loved running around discovering new places when I was a low level newbie. I was never happy SE lifted the cap on those areas. Took away the challenge. It's near impossible to get 5 other people to do a level 30 Promy these days unless you're a long time player with enough friends that would care to spend atleast 4 hours doing them again for the eleventh time. I never said it was always possible, but for me at the time it was an option, and it was way more fun.
good mor...

It was also challenging. It took me, a 9 year FFXI veteran, 2 tries. I would also say that it's not possible for any other job at that level.
